Researchers devise means to create blood by identifying earliest stem cells

Johns Hopkins researchers have discovered the earliest form of human blood stem cells and deciphered the mechanism by which these embryonic stem cells replicate and grow. They also found a surprising biological marker that pinpoints these stem cells, which serve as the progenitors for red blood cells and lymphocytes.

Bettering the Blade for Beating

I love my KitchenAid Stand Mixer. It’s red and shiny and makes whipping, mixing and beating so incredibly simple. My biggest pet peeve with using it, however, is that I always have to stop the machine half way through to scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl with a spatula in order to get the unincorporated bits to mix in with whatever I am churning. The new BeaterBlade+ ends this tedious task. There’s a BeaterBlade+ made for use with a variety of different stand mixers from most of the big name manufacturers, not just KitchenAid. Here’s how it works: essentially, the BeaterBlade+ has the spatula attached. Running along the sides of each beater wing, is a flexible rubber flange that scrapes the edges of the bowl as the machine mixes. No stopping necessary. Using it to mix batter for zucchini bread and cookie dough was delightful, and creaming butter, sugar and eggs was so easy. One little caveat though, it does makes a knocking sound as the edges hit the sides of the bowl. But I can live with that.
